Chaos and high confusion is a rampant part of me. This disorientation demands a constant need for comfort. Therefore longing for comfort is central to my work. However the path to comfort is not linear. Often, what is safe does not bring peace, but more pandemonium. This idea of comfort, presents itself through various exploration of nostalgia. Through an explosion of saccharine pastel colors, nostalgia takes physical form as manifestation of recollecting memory.
I explore nostalgia by creating objects that can become vessels for this sentiment. I utilize various processes by using techniques such as hand dying, sewing, and collaging. By fusing non-traditional materials such as fusible films and latex in a more traditional craft practice, my work is vibrant fusion that embodies layers and soft haze of memories. Often I work with materials that have translucency to create depth. Currently, the fusible films I work with have a sheer gauzy quality. With this material, the mercurial property of memories is recognizes as the objects I make changes in color by light.
For me, it is crucial to honor and keep shards and scraps leftover from what was once whole. By the practice of keeping the remnants, my own studio practice follows almost a cyclical manner. My collections of scraps of fabric, dried paint, and various other knickknacks provide the beginning build blocks. A starting point is almost always partially determined as the materials that are collected reemerge as part. Collage then enters the picture and becomes major component in my methodology. Various scraps entwine and connect to reform. While haphazard, leftovers are cherished for what it once was and is. Through this pursuit, my objects become vessels, carriers for what was and is.
