Biografia

I am largely concerned with the relationship between sound and vision. My artwork usually manifests as generative animation with audio.

The use of a computer lends itself particularly well to the task of depicting this kind of artwork, facilitating the creation of custom software that can transform one source of data into another; e.g. audio to visual, visual to audio. It allows me to engineer a visual theme that responds in accordance to a defined rule set, and also enables me to define what any other external input affects.

I’m often inspired by music, creating visuals to accompany it. Sometimes I work the other way, with an idea of a visual theme, later creating a soundtrack that fits the decided aesthetic.

I tend to use a screen or projector to present my artwork. Screens are familiar and suitable for presenting most moving visuals. Projection allows visual data to be cast across objects and space as light. This can be used to force the consideration of the artwork in a sculptural context, raising questions concerning the implication of the objects chosen and the configuration of the space occupied.
