According to Simmel, an object independent of us is what gives us the most pleasure. I make paintings in oil on linen because I want their object-ness to never be in doubt. As they are made with some of the most archival quality materials possible, they should outlive me for a good while, nullifying any of my residual fear of death.
My subject matter, the content of these paintings, is sexual and violent. It’s about the disconnection between what people say and what they actually choose to do, the inhumanity of humans, of being human. I find this darkness, fear, disgust, and anger to be soothing in its honesty.
Some of my paintings may look pretty, but there’s usually something subversive going on- a variety of immature dark humor. In a painting of a beautiful garden or forest there could be a charming figure looking mournfully out to the viewer as he takes a much-needed shit, wishing that the beauty of the wood could have hidden him as he intended. Other paintings are more expressionistic, with nothing more explicit than a figure hurling him or herself violently over strokes of paint. My imagery is developing at the same breakneck pace as my methods of painting them.
