Artist Statement
My work is inspired by the culture of the city that I was born and raised up in, the African body and continent. My work revolves around the themes of identity and representation. Through my artwork, I try to re-imagine ways in which I can represent aspects of the African body (self or others), the African Identity and continent, the specific geographical areas that I come from in and the culture. Through my work, I hope to add to the diversity of creative work that is emerging from Africa. I create sculptures using off cuts (of materials such as leather and fabric), recycled beads, wire and old plastic cable insulation. I continually experiment to discover new materials or mediums that I can work with. I also paint and draw occasionally.
