Biography
The work explores myths, urban legends and fairy tales through painting, printmaking, photography and multi-media installation. As a citizen of the United States and South Korea frequently going from one country to the other, the artist has been raised in both cultures. Being an Asian female living in both New York City and Seoul, South Korea the concept of "home" has become ubiquitous. The interesting dynamic is how the natives of each country, anywhere the artist travels perceives her. A general Asian stereotype is "Asians are gentle and non threatening" and a general stereotype of Americans in Asia is "Americans are optimistic and simple." These adjectives are the superficial gloss to the artist's work by creating cartoon like animals and portraying humans in an anime influenced approach. The innocuous imagery is accompanied with humor but at times can be perverse and offbeat. Being a "perpetual foreigner" allows Jean Rim to observe both cultures in an anthropological manner to study how the West and the East is oppositional or parallel to each other through social media and depict it in her work.
