Biography
Giovanna La Falce is an original artist, gifted with notable expressive strength, who leads us through a study of the body and its movements into the interior world of the soul and the conscience. Her exploration began with her painting, with her oils on canvas where her fervor can be felt in every line. The juxtaposition of lights and shades, often only bitonal, reveals a clear interest in the darker side of the human personality.
The next step of the artist is the discovery of tridimensional art: the photographic imasges bronze sculptures, slender structures sustaining material hollowed out until it reaches the essence of the spirit. Human figures without faces, where the somatic features deliberately lose their identifying characteristics in order not to become slaves of what seems.
At the end of this period, the circle closed and Giovanna La Falce returned to photography. She produced works that aren’t exactly paintings, but which certainly have the soul of a painting. Perhaps the nearest thing to a definition that we could come up with is photographic paintings: starting from photographic materials, and on the wave of emotion, the artist transforms these with the aid of sophisticated techniques and transfers them into her inner world.
As in painting, here too the image flourishes on contrasts, as does life – what we see and what remains concealed – that which is immediately evident and that which imperceptibly appears – the clearly drawn lines and the shadings – the spoken word and thoughts – the seen and the imagined – the known and the unknown – the conscious and the unconscious – the apparent, the real, the unreal and the thousand possibilities. The starting point is the moment when the photograph is taken – an instant captured in an infinite sequence of movements, of uninterrupted becoming. Images tend to provoke and incite wonder, in the face of a conciliation of apparently irreconcilable opposites which is harmonious and surreal at the same time.
In March 2012 Giovanna La Falce won the prize of audience at the Photographic Contest Dall’Acqua in poi with her work OMAGGIO ALLA MEMORIA (President of the jury Oliviero Toscani)
From March 19 till February 1 Giovanna La Falce will present her personal exhibition RIFLESSI at the Contemporary Art Gallery STATUTO 13, via Statuto 13, Brera District, Milan, Italy
