Michael Ardu Critical Text
The exhibition of November of MArte space of Oristano is the exhibition of the photographer Michael Ardu entitled "In Re Quieta" the first chapter of the "Caddos and Cadderis" (Horses and Riders). Their description, lucid and shared, goes beyond the boundaries of the double portrait, and in this close relationship identifies a millennial collaborative bond that often comes to define an inseparable unity. As in war competitions of the past or in their competitive sublimation, in fact, horse and rider form a whole that is symbolic solution in the mythological figure of the centaur, half-animal, half-human: the strength and vehemence of the drives are mitigated by the bridle rational, fair liberty is tamed by the intellectual sovereignty. In the photographs in the exhibition it remains only a few traces of quell'atavica subordination, for example in narrow possessive of the reins, the animal while driving in the race, he also conveys a sense of security or in skill challenges that underlies the logic of gain us (ur) instrumentally to the horse, but it can make the object of a real worship. Submission, real or perceived, it seems outdated in the shots of Michael Ardu and attention is focused on the relationship he calls "romantic", that is, on that emotional bond based on trust, which is created between horse and rider. Their language is not only made of interpretations of gestures and sounds, insights and looks, but consists above all in physical contact and caresses. A sweetness that does not conflict with the sense of power that emanates from the equestrian group, because it characterizes it in its specificity. It's hard to look at the works of Michael without normally surface artistic memories of the past. We think of the variations on the theme of Sassu, La parade of Edgar Degas before the competition, the vertical spears of the Battle of San Romano, painted by Paolo Uccello in the '400, which become the shadow of guns nell'Ardia of Sedilo . Michael Ardu photographing her reality with spontaneity and freshness not obvious, from Oristano who grew up with the tradition of Sartiglia magazine and relived in new English as well as international; He does not want to be inspired by a particular artist and avant-garde art movements, or who praised the speed, the strength and victory creating some myths of the contemporary age. Yet these are present in his art, but for indirect assimilation through culture and visual communication of the late twentieth century, which Michael is the son. And we recognize them for the same reason. Often the consonances are also created due to a subjective anthropological research. The rites of Sartiglia or the Palio of Siena, between tradition and superstition, communicates well with the magical assumptions of first representations of horses to the Lascaux Caves. But, in reality, the anthropological analysis is aimed at the discovery of common roots of feeling, know-how, the right to live in the natural perspective, he does not only frame the portrait of the sculptural group of the horse and rider, but infuses the right existential rhythm in quiet king.
